How to Adjust an E-Nail Coil for a Better Banger or Dab Nail Fit

A quartz enail banger will sometimes have a slight sizing difference from your enail coil. It's usually a small difference around a half millimeter, but this small sizing discrepancy can affect your dabbing temperature or might make it a bit difficult to fit your banger into your coil. For the most part you should be able to heat up your enail coil a little to get your quartz banger into the coil. Quartz and metal both expand and contract with heating and cooling which makes a small sizing difference easy to manage. If you find yourself in a bit of a bind where the coil fit is too tight or too loose, well explain how to fix this below.

Why Enail Coil Fit Matters?

There are some instances where you will need to slightly tighten or loosen your enail coil so that you get the most optimal fit for your quartz banger or dab nail. If your coil fits too tightly around your banger, your banger might crack when the coil is heated, on the other hand your banger might not heat up to temperature if there's a large gap between your coil and banger.

Vapebrat enail coils in particular are designed with a slightly bendable metal so that you can tighten or loosen your it for the perfect fit. Now, there are two different styles of enail coils, the axial and barrel, so there are two different ways to loosen or tighten based on your coils specific style. Within this blog we will demonstrate both ways to adjust them for the best fit possible on your quartz banger or dab nail.

First, Make Sure You Actually Have the Correct Sized Coil

You can test this by measuring the inner diameter of your enail coil and the bottom diameter of your enail banger. If you don't have calipers laying around or measuring tape you can use some household items to verify the sizes.

A slight adjustment by bending a coil is totally fine, but if you have the wrong size coil completely (a 20mm coil and a 25mm banger) it is best not to try and bend your coil to fit your specific banger or dab nail.

How Should an E-Nail Coil Fit a Banger

Your enail coil should fit snug around your quartz banger or dab nail, snug enough that it's making contact but not overly snug where it's difficult to attach your banger to your enail coil. Avoid overtightening the coil, as excessive pressure can place unnecessary stress on your quartz banger.

Remember, an enail coil is made to transfer heat to your dab nail, in order to heat it up to temperature. It is very important that this fit is proper so that your dabbing temperature is spot on instead of wasting away your dab or potentially breaking your banger.

Barrel Coils and Enail Coil Adjustments:

Barrel coils are made up of 4-5 metal wire wraps that scale up forming an “o” shape, they do not have a bottom like an axial coil. Barrel coils are used with nectar collector nails, bucket bangers that have a sidearm or titanium dab nails. To slightly increase the diameter of a barrel coil there are two steps to take.

Step-by-Step Guide

Important: Make sure the coil is completely cool and disconnected from the e-nail controller before making any adjustments. Make small adjustments at a time and test the fit frequently.

To Open the Top of the Coil:

  1. Hold the bottom two wraps of the coil with your left hand and the coil rod with your right hand. The coil rod is the portion of the coil that extends from the wraps and leads to the coil cable.
  2. With your left hand, gently twist the coil toward you while, with your right hand, pushing the coil rod away from you.
  3. Repeat until the coil has opened slightly. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat the process if necessary.

To Open the Bottom of the Coil:

  1. Hold the top two wraps of the coil and the coil rod with one hand. For the bottom portion of the coil, you can either place the point where the coil ends against a table or other solid, stable surface, or grip the bottom two wraps with pliers, vise-grips, or a similar tool.
  2. If you are placing the tip of the coil against a solid surface, gently push it against the surface to open the coil slightly. If using pliers or vise-grips, gently twist the bottom portion to the left to open the coil slightly.
  3. Repeat until the coil has opened slightly. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat the process if necessary.

Adjusting the Coil Rod Height

  • There may be times when the sidearm of the banger is too high for the coil rod to rest on properly. This is okay. You can simply bend the coil rod upward slightly so that it comes up high enough to rest on the sidearm of the banger.

To Tighten the Top of the Coil:

  1. Hold the bottom two wraps of the coil with your left hand. With your right hand, hold the coil rod - the portion of the coil that extends from the wraps and leads to the coil cable.
  2. With your left hand, gently twist the coil away from you, while using your right hand to move the coil rod toward you. This will gradually tighten the upper portion of the barrel coil.
  3. Make only a small adjustment at a time. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat the process if additional tightening is needed.

To Tighten the Bottom of the Coil:

  1. Hold the top two wraps of the coil and the coil rod securely with one hand.
  2. Grip the bottom two wraps with your other hand or carefully use a tool such as pliers or vise-grips for additional leverage.
  3. Gently twist the bottom portion of the coil to the right to tighten the lower wraps.
  4. Make a small adjustment, then test the fit with your banger. Repeat as necessary until the coil fits securely around the banger.

Axial Enail Coils and Enail Coil Adjustments:

Axial enail coils look similar to barrel coils except they have a few wire wraps at the bottom, creating a closed bucket like shape. Axial coils can vary in depth, some will have 5-6 wraps and others will have 8, it really depends on which banger or dab nail it's made for. The most standard is 5 wraps.

Step-by-Step Guide

Important: Make sure the coil is completely cool and disconnected from the e-nail controller before making any adjustments. Make small adjustments at a time and test the fit frequently.

To Open the Top of the Coil:

  1. Hold the bottom two wraps of the barrel portion of the coil with your left hand and the coil rod with your right hand. The coil rod is the portion of the coil that extends from the wraps and leads to the coil cable.
  2. With your left hand, gently twist the coil toward you while, with your right hand, pushing the coil rod away from you.
  3. Repeat until the top of the coil has opened slightly. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat the process if necessary.

How to Adjust an Axial Enail Coil

To Open the Bottom of the Coil:

Because an axial coil has a flat heating section underneath the banger, adjusting the bottom is slightly different from adjusting a standard barrel coil.

  1. Hold the upper wraps of the coil and the coil rod securely with one hand.
  2. For the bottom axial portion, we recommend using pliers or vise-grips to carefully grip the portion that needs to be adjusted. This provides the most control when opening the bottom of the coil.
  3. Gently pull or bend the bottom axial portion away from the barrel section to create slightly more room for the banger.
  4. Another option is to carefully insert a small, sturdy object between the flat axial portion and the bottom of the barrel section and gently use it as leverage to open the spacing. However, pliers or vise-grips generally provide better control.
  5. A table or other solid, stable surface can be used to help support the coil while making the adjustment, but unlike a standard barrel coil, we do not recommend simply pushing the flat axial portion directly against the surface to open it.

Make only a small adjustment at a time. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat if additional adjustment is necessary.

To Tighten the Top of the Coil:

  1. Hold the bottom two wraps of the barrel portion of the coil with your left hand and the coil rod with your right hand.
  2. With your left hand, gently twist the coil away from you while, with your right hand, moving the coil rod toward you.
  3. Repeat until the top of the coil has tightened slightly. Test the fit with your banger, then repeat the process if necessary.

How to Tighten Your Axial Enail Coil

To Tighten the Bottom of the Coil:

  1. Hold the upper wraps of the coil and the coil rod securely with one hand.
  2. Grip the bottom axial portion with your other hand or carefully use pliers or vise-grips for additional control.
  3. Gently bend the flat axial portion toward the bottom of the barrel section. This reduces the space between the bottom heating section and the banger, creating a tighter fit.
  4. Make only a small adjustment at a time. Test the fit with your banger after each adjustment and repeat if additional tightening is necessary.

Unlike opening a standard barrel coil, a table or hard surface should generally not be used to force the axial portion closed. Using your hand, pliers, or vise-grips gives you much better control over the adjustment.

Do Not Distort the Shape of Your Enail Coil

The goal is to keep your enail coil perfectly round, level, and evenly spaced. Distorting the enail coil will leave you in the same bind as before with uneven heating and temperature differences. Twisting with too much force will push the wraps out of alignment, again that's why it's best to keep your adjustments small and check your coil and banger fit through each adjustment.

You don't want to change the enail coil diameter drastically, a practical small fix is fine but if you are reshaping the entire coil to fit your banger you might be better off buying the proper fit. Enail coils are shaped and manufactured this way for proper heat transfer to your dab nail.

What if My Coil is Only Loose on One Side?

This could mean that your coil is the right size but you need to position your coil correctly on your banger. If your coil is sitting a little lopsided make sure your oclamp is positioned where it should be, sometimes the oclamp prongs need to be slid around so that it holds up the coil the right way.

Your enail coil should fit flush with the sides and the bottom of your banger, if your banger is seated crooked you will obviously see a gap on one side. If your coil is warped you'll also get an uneven fit.

How Do You Know You Have the Right Fit?

The goal is for the enail coil to fit snugly around the sides and bottom of the banger without requiring excessive force. The bottom enail coil heating section should sit close to the bottom of the banger to provide good heat transfer while still allowing the banger to be inserted and removed without excessive pressure!
