E-Nail vs Torch: The Ultimate Comparison

The battle between an enail setup and a torch/rig dabbing setup has been a long standing conflict for dabbing aficionados since forever ago. On one hand with an enail you have more power and control over your dabs, with a torch setup you don't have to rely on an electrical outlet to start dabbing. Both options have their pros and cons, by the end of this guide you’ll have a straight apples to apples comparison, for you to make the best decision that fits your dabbing preferences and lifestyle!

BOOM.
So lets get down to business, the first most important thing to get an understanding of, is an e-nail.

What is an E-Nail?

The word enail is short for electric nail, it is just that, an electric powered nail made for dabbing. There are three parts that make up an enail, which are the controller box, an enail coil, and the power cord. Think of the controller box as the “brains” of the operation, this box contains up and down arrows so that you can adjust and select your desired temp. From there, the “brains” of the controller sends out a signal to the enail coil to heat up until it gets to that specific temperature. The hot coil transfers heat to your quartz banger or dab nail so that it gets to a hot enough temperature for vaporization of your dab.

The Science Behind Electronic Dab Nails

An enail controller has something called a Digital PID built into it, it's a feedback system that assesses temperature. This is how enails are so precise when it comes to dabbing temperature control.

Now, the enail coil is what makes the magic happen. There are many different types of enail coils, different styles and sizes made for specific dab nails. The new enail kit you're eyeing most likely has a 20mm or 25mm enail coil, larger sizes like 30mm and 35mm are options that are available if you like taking larger, more hefty dabs.

The last and final piece that is worth a mention is your dab nail options. As stated previously, your enail coil heats your dab nail to temperature so that you are able to vaporize your concentrates off of your dab nail. There are a world of options out there, the main materials are either quartz, titanium or ceramic. Most common is quartz because it provides better flavor over titanium!

How Does an Enail Work?

An electric dab nail needs to be plugged into a wall outlet to work, it operates on electric just as the name implies. You are able to adjust the temperature from a low of 200 degrees to over 1000 degrees. The controller box communicates with the thermocouple inside your enail coil to adjust the temperature accordingly. This setup doesn't require any guesswork when it comes to dabbing temperature. You can experiment freely to find out exactly what temperature works best for you and your dabbing style!

What is a Butane Torch and Dab Rig Setup?

This is the OG, Triple OG, way to dab. The setup is pretty self explanatory, you need a butane torch, dab rig, and your dab nail to get going. There are different types of butane torches available, like a single flame or triple flame torch. The butane torch is used to heat the dab nail to a high enough temperature to vaporize your dab.

Single flame torches have a more concentrated flame, while triple flame torches produce way more heat and power. Single flame torches are great for beginners and for those that love low temp dabs, it prevents you from getting your dab nail too hot and burning up your entire dab. Think about it as less power but more control. For tripe flame torches they obviously provide a lot more heat leading to less of a wait time for your banger to get up to temperature. Since the triple flame torch covers more “ground” you can expect more even and uniform heating.

Now, when it comes to butane you would want to go for something that is refined with a high purity. The stuff that you can find in a hardware store usually has contaminants or chemicals that oftentimes make your dabs taste gross. Brands like Newport which have been around since forever, are a reputable source!

How Does a Torch and Dab Rig Setup Work?

As previously mentioned, the whole setup is pretty straightforward, dab nail goes in rig, dab nail gets heated by torch, dab goes in dab nail and inhale. This type of setup is simple and it's usually what a lot of beginners start with, you don't need to plug anything in, you don't need to learn what certain buttons do, just quick and simple. However, that doesn't mean there isn't a learning curve.

One of the main reasons why enails are sometimes preferred over torches is because of the temperature control. When using a torch you are guessing the temperature of your banger based on visual cues or timing. The quartz or titanium will glow a certain color once it reaches your preferred temperature, or you can opt for a 30-60 second heating time with a cool down period before dabbing. This knowledge comes with trial and error, eventually you'll find what works for you.

Temperature Control and Flavor Preservation

The best starting dabbing temperature is hands down around 500-550 degrees, you can always go lower or higher in temp based on what you prefer. Higher in temp will get you a heavy hitter, lower in temp will get you a more flavorful dab with the extra effect of terpenes. An enail device makes this temperature selection a lot easier than using a torch, but you can always use a dab temp reader until you can get the temperature right!

The Terpene Temperature Sweet Spot

Terpenes are ruined when they are met with super high heat, terpenes assist thc and other cannabinoids with certain desirable effects. Some will boost your mood, some will help you relax more, others work to reduce anxiety, the list goes on.

To reap the full benefits of terpenes you’d want to dab at lower temperatures around 400-450 degrees. A balanced dab with even effects from some terpenes and more cannabinoids would be around 450-500, higher temps around 550-600 is a heavier dab with the least amount of terpenes and large plumes of vapor.

E-Nail Temperature Precision Advantages

Enails have a very accurate temperature accuracy, some are more accurate than others but you can expect almost an exact temperature with an exception of sometimes being a couple degrees off. This type of device gives off consistent heating to the enail coil until you turn it off, once it's heated to temperature you don't have to keep reheating throughout your session.

An enail coil usually covers the entire bottom of your dab nail, maintaining perfect temperature with the most even heating you can get.

There are LCD enails available that show you two temperature displays, one that shows the exact temperature of your enail coil and the other shows you your set temperature. Micro enails provide you with the same info but on one digital display instead of two.

Torch Temperature Guesswork

A torch is held up to the dab nail in order to heat it up to temperature, since it's held by hand you can sometimes get some inconsistent heating called hot spots. Sections of your dab nail might be hotter than other parts causing your dab to be vaporized unevenly.

Torch heating requires a bit of guessing as to when your banger or dab nail is finally at the right temperature. This can sometimes lead to burning through your dabs or not vaporizing them enough which is wasteful.

Cost Analysis: Initial Investment vs Long Term Savings

Alright, I know what you're thinking. The initial cost of an enail might look pretty expensive but I promise it pays off in the long run. Although an enail might cost around 100-300 dollars at first but the overall maintenance and items that need to be replaced is super slim to none giving you those long term savings.

Upfront Costs Break Down

E-Nail Set Up: $100-$500 (with premium features)

  • Entry Level Setup: VapeBrat Copa Enail, VapeBrat 20mm Axial Enail
  • Mid Range: MiniNail Coil Caddy, High Five LCD Enail
  • Premium: VapeBrat Quatro Enail

Torch Setup:

  • $20-$50 for Butane
  • $20-$70 for Torch

Long Term Operating Costs (12 Month Analysis)

  • Enail: Electricity $2-$5/month = $24-$60 per year
  • Torch: Butane Refills $10-$20/month = $120-$240 per year

Hidden Cost Factors

Using a torch without accurate temperature gauging can cause you to burn through your wax without actually using much of it, which becomes costly in the long run.

Purchasing a torch that is iffy when it comes to quality most likely will not last very long, if you are investing in a cheap torch expect to replace within a short timeframe.

You COULD need an enail coil replacement once within the year, this really depends on the coil quality and how you maintain your coil. Leaving your enail on for extended periods of time will cause your coil to burn out sooner than expected.

Quartz bangers can break, crack, or fracture under intense heat, if you are running multiple back to back high heat sessions youll most likely find yourself needing a new banger quickly.

Safety Comparison E-nail Vs Torch

Dabbing safety is super important, anytime you are working with super high temperatures its best to take the appropriate precautions so that you don't hurt yourself, or.. Burn your house down.

Butane Torch Safety Concerns

  • Using a butane torch for dabbing exposes you to an open, very HOT flame. You need to be extra careful of where you are pointing your torch, how it's positioned, and even after heating you need to be wary of the hot nozzle.
  • Butane is not meant to be inhaled, after your dab nail is heated to temperature you should wait a minute or two before dabbing. You don't want to accidentally inhale this stuff and cause any damage to your lungs.
  • If you have young children in your home, you should look for a torch that has a safety lock on it. This is a sure way that they will not somehow ignite it and cause harm to themselves. Unfortunately most torches do not come with a safety and are relatively easy to ignite.

Enail Safety Advantages

  • With an enail you arent exposed to any open flames since the heat is contained in the metal portion of your enail coil. This section functions almost like a stove top burner, so you STILL need to be very careful of the items around your setup and where you place your hands to avoid any burns or fires.
  • Enail coils are safely secured onto a dab nail, at least they should be, therefore you won't have to worry about it catching anything on fire from a distance like a torch. But since the coil is still hot and bumping into it can cause a burn, there are enail coil guards on the market that shield your enail coil from coming into contact with anything.
  • Most enails come with an automatic shut off feature, this is to protect the user from an accidental house fire.

Cannabis Concentrate Safety Best Practices

  • It's best to dab in a well ventilated area, but make sure the temperature of the room or the vicinity isn't too cold or too hot; this will ultimately affect the temperature of your dabs.
  • Dosage of your dabs is also a key point to highlight and this is especially important for new users, you do not want to overdo it. If you would like to read more about dab sizing and whats the best sized dab for a beginner, you can click here.
  • If you prefer torch dabbing over using an enail you would want to make sure you are properly storing your butane and your torches. A hot garage in the middle of July is not an ideal spot, this can cause pressure buildup which can cause it to explode. Most manufacturers do not recommend temperatures exceeding 120 degrees.
