What is Decarbing? How to Make Edibles - Concentrate and Oil Infusion
Here is a quick rundown of decarbing. Decarbing is the process of using low heating to get thca to convert into thc. This step is super important when it comes to making edibles because.. if you don't decarb beforehand, your edibles will have little to no effect.

Not all concentrate needs to be decarbed prior to infusing it into oil. The best way to start your process of making edibles is by identifying which concentrate you have!
Different Types of Wax that DO NOT NEED To Be Decarbed:
- Distillate
- RSO
- CO2 Oil
- Oil inside of a Cart
Different Types of Concentrate that DO NEED to be Decarbed:
- Shatter
- Wax
- Budder
- Crumble
- Live Resin
- Diamonds / Terp Sauce
- Rosin
- Bubble Hash
Quick Tip:
When picking a concentrate type to infuse with your oil, keep in mind that different types of concentrate will affect the flavor of your oil and your edibles. For example RSO has a stronger flavor than most other concentrates, while distillate is completely flavorless.
1. How to Decarb Your Concentrate
Oven Method:
- Start by preheating your oven to 200-230 degrees fahrenheit.
- Next, place your concentrate onto parchment paper or if it's already in a borosilicate / pyrex jar you can leave it inside of there.
- Put your concentrate onto a baking sheet and then into your oven.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes
Quick Tips:
- - Cannabinoids and Terpenes burn at a certain temperature so try to keep an eye on your concentrates and make sure they do not exceed 250 degrees. Use a thermometer if you feel that it is necessary!
- - Once you see that the concentrate is melted and the bubbling has slowed down then it should be ready to come out of the oven.
- - If you are working with a more dry or crumbly type of concentrate make sure you are stirring it around every few minutes to avoid burning.
- - You CAN use silicone for decarbing however, silicone can sometimes release harmful fumes when heated up for a longer period of time. Or it can change the flavor of your concentrate.
Water Bath Method - Works better for Larger Amounts of Concentrate:
- Place your preferred concentrate inside of a mason jar
- Screw the lid on, but not too tight, a light twist should be fine, you don't want the mason jar lid to pop open or crack because of the pressure.
- Fill a pot with water, make sure the water is simmering at a low temperature.
- Place your mason jar inside the water, the jar needs to be half way submerged.
- Allow the mason jar to sit inside the water for 30-40 minutes until your concentrate bubbling has slowed down.
Quick Tips:
- - The water bath method can be done on a stove top or an oven. Completing this method in an oven you would want to swap out your pot of a baking dish and heat your mason jar for 40-45 minutes instead.
- - Since the mason jar has a lid it helps to contain the smell a little better than heating your concentrates alone in the oven.
- - Do not let your water exceed a temperature of 230 degrees, it might be necessary to use a thermometer with this method of decarbing.
Once your concentrate has been decarbed, allow it to cool down before starting to infuse it with your oil base!
2. Choose Your Infusion Base
When infusing oils you are binding the thc to fats. It's best to pick an oil with high fat content like coconut oil, butter, olive oil, or avocado oil.
When choosing your base make sure it compliments the edibles you are attempting to make. If you are making brownies or cookies you probably don't want to use something like olive oil or peanut oil that has a strong flavoring to it.
The most common household oils like canola or vegetable oil are totally fine to use, they also have a neutral flavor so it can be used in various applications when it comes to edibles.
3. Infusion Process
The easiest way to infuse your concentrates and your oil is by using a saucepan over a stove top, however you can use the double boiling method or a crock pot as well.
Stove Top Infusion:
- Warm up your chosen oil base in a small saucepan on your stove to around 160-180 degrees.
- Add in your decarbed concentrate and stir.
- Allow your mixture to heat for 10-20 minutes.
- Remove from the stove top and allow it to cool.
Quick Tips:
- - It's probably a good idea to use a thermometer for this process, you don't want the temperature of your oil base to exceed 180 degrees. If you drop your decarbed concentrates into oil that is too hot, you will burn up the cannabinoids and terpenes making your oil pretty much useless.
- - Stir your mixture periodically, you want to see your concentrate melt into your oil base.
Water Bath Infusion:
If you used the mason jar method to decarb your concentrate you can add your oil base directly into the same mason jar for this infusion process.
- After your decarbed concentrate is cooled down to room temperature add in your oil base into the mason jar.
- Screw the lid back on lightly, put your jar back into the simmering water pot.
- Make sure your water is around 160-180 degrees and your mason jar is at least half way submerged.
- Heat your oil and concentrate mixture for 20-30 minutes until your concentrate is melted into your oil.
Voila! Now you have yourself some THC cooking oil!
Edible Dosing Equation - Calculating mg Per Serving:
You can calculate the dose of each serving by using this simple equation. Take the weight of your concentrate in grams and multiply it by the thc - potency of your concentrate. Then multiply by 1000 and divide by the number of servings in your recipe.
For example, 0.5 gram of concentrate x 0.75 (75% potency) x 1000 / 12 servings = 31mg per serving
This is relatively high in comparison to edibles made with flower infusion because flower will usually have a lower thc content than concentrate does!
The standard dose for edibles is around 10mg’s, if you are a newbie start off with 5mg and work your way up!
